Safety Through Transparency

The Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act—commonly called the Clery Act—requires colleges and universities to share key information about campus safety. Its purpose is to ensure transparency and help students, families, and employees make informed decisions. Under the Clery Act, institutions must:

• Collect and maintain crime statistics for specific crimes occurring on campus, on public property near campus, and in certain off-campus buildings.
• Report and distribute crime data annually by submitting statistics to the U.S. Department of Education and publishing the Annual Security Report (ASR) for students, employees, and prospective members of the campus community.
• Issue timely warnings to alert the campus community about certain ongoing threats to safety.
• Maintain a daily crime log of all reported crimes that is accessible to the public.
• Establish and disclose campus safety policies, including those related to alcohol and drug use, crime prevention, reporting procedures, and emergency response.
