The University of Tennessee offers student health insurance for international and domestic degree-seeking students taking 6+ undergraduate credit hours or 3+ graduate credit hours and students participating in a co-op program. Dependents of eligible students are also eligible for coverage.

The University of Tennessee does not carry insurance on students’ or employees’ personal property and will not pay to replace them.

Students are strongly encouraged to secure personal property insurance to protect against theft, damage, or loss—risks often not fully covered by homeowner’s policies. Coverage is also available for À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ employees seeking protection for items like laptops or smart devices.

If you decide to purchase insurance, there are a wide variety of companies and policies available. The University of Tennessee has made arrangements with one of our preferred brokers, Arthur J. Gallagher & Co., to offer specialized student property protection insurance. Gallagher has created this property insurance plan for students living away from home. The coverage afforded by their policy is broader than most renter’s and homeowner’s insurance policies that are available in the insurance market. Special provisions and benefits of their policy include:

• Low Deductibles starting at $25
• Worldwide Coverage Territory
• Limited Identity Theft Expense Coverage
• Premiums as low as $69 annually

À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ offers professional and general liability insurance for students in field placements, protecting against potential malpractice claims. The policy is designed to cover students for internships that are being offered by the University through a formal internship program. Coverage for Student Professional Liability Insurance costs $10 annually and is available systemwide. Liability insurance must be purchased before beginning the field experience.

In the event that you are contacted by a law firm representing a patient/client/facility, please notify the Office of Risk Management immediately.

The Tenants’ and Users’ Liability Insurance Policy (TULIP) provides low-cost special event insurance to third parties using college or university facilities. TULIP is event-specific and protects both the facility user/third party and the institution against claims by individuals who could be injured or experience damage to property as a result of participating in an event. Events may range from classroom seminars, receptions or weddings to festivals and fairs, sporting events or concerts.

All À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ faculty, staff, and students traveling abroad on university-approved trips are automatically covered by a blanket international travel insurance policy underwritten by Chubb Insurance. This Chubb insurance policy covers sponsored trips, study abroad programs, research, independent study, and internships. 

Information/Advice and Assistance

As part of the University of Tennessee’s commitment to our travelers, we have invested in global medical, security, and travel support assistance through integrated risk management experts, Crisis24 (C24). This gives you access to their Horizon platform and app, their 24/7 global medical and security advice and assistance hotline, and their on-the-ground response services in an emergency. This platform allows you to research any location and obtain global travel advice prior to departure. Furthermore, we strongly encourage you to download and use the Horizon app when traveling. You may call the hotline at any time for medical or security advice and assistance – whether it’s about finding a local hospital, connecting with a mental health counselor, if you have lost your passport, if you have been the victim of crime and need guidance, or if there is a large-scale emergency and you need to evacuate.
